Wednesday, Aug. 26 — “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
In West Africa, photographer and hip-hop archivist Selorm Attikpo documents a culture he feels the world keeps underestimating. His desire to capture and preserve the story of Ghanaian hip hop – on local terms – led to “Mending to Preserve,” his newly opened exhibition at ADAMA that traces the ties between Accra’s and Atlanta’s hip-hop histories. This week we take a look at the work he has on display.
Meanwhile, self-taught Atlanta painter André René Epps Jr. is still dreaming of that kind of visibility for his work. Epps’ passionate pitch led to this week’s Sketchbook feature and his quest to find a gallery home for his ten-painting series “Everything They Didn’t Tell Me.” Over a year of studio visits and curator conversations has, so far, yielded no offers. He remains undaunted, exploring renting gallery space on his own. His vision is that strong.
One is building an archive because no one else has yet to. The other is manifesting a home for his work.
