The Braves took Game 2 of their series with the Nationals behind a beautiful performance from the pitching staff. Bryce Elder turned in a gem, tossing six innings of one-run ball, and Elieser Hernández picked up the save, going the final three innings and allowing just one run with four strikeouts.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for the Braves to keep him on the roster. The club announced today that Hernández has been designated for assignment, recalling James Karinchak from Gwinnett.

I say “again” in the title because this is now the second time Hernández has been designated for assignment after a brilliant performance, simply so the Braves could have a fresh arm in the bullpen. He’s now thrown six innings this season, picking up a win and a save in his two appearances. Those kinds of performances should be rewarded, not punished because the rules essentially give the Braves no other choice.
Hopefully Hernández clears waivers for a second time and makes his way back onto the major-league roster. He’s played a key role in the Braves’ second-half surge, which now has them leading the Phillies by eight games in the NL East.
