Atlanta Public Schools’ Executive Director of Athletics Gregory Goodwin has been named as a 2026 Congressional Pioneer Award recipient in the Fourth Congressional District of Georgia.
The award, which honors individuals for their leadership and service to their communities, was presented by U.S. Representative Hank Johnson during a recent ceremony at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
Goodwin joined Atlanta Public Schools as executive director of Athletics in July 2025, following previous roles as interim athletic director for DeKalb County Schools and principal of Redan High School.

APS said that Goodwin, who has more than 30 years of experience in educational athletics and school leadership, has been pivotal in strengthening the district’s athletics program.
Among Goodwin’s accomplishments includes helping to establish the Hank Aaron Diamonds Initiative, a program (supported by the Atlanta Braves Foundation’s Henry Louis Aaron Fund) that aims to rebuild every high school baseball and softball field across the Atlanta school district.
