Braves add starting pitcher, Grant Holmes to 60-day IL

The weekend continued the nightmare that is the Atlanta Braves 2025 campaign. Not only were they swept to begin a nine-game road trip, marking five losses in a row, but they also lost Grant Holmes to an elbow injury Saturday night.

The Braves immediately placed Holmes on the 15-day IL after the game as they awaited further tests, and it seems like those tests revealed the worst. Following Sunday’s loss, he was transferred to the 60-day IL to make room for Erick Fedde, who they acquired from the Cardinals for cash considerations.

I actually wrote about the Braves picking up Fedde earlier in the week when the Cardinals originally designated him for assignment, and that was before the season-ending injury to Grant Holmes.

“Erick Fedde had a career resurgence in 2024 after playing ball in Korea the year prior, starting in 31 games and recording a 3.30 ERA. However, 2025 hasn’t been nearly as kind. In 20 starts, he owns a 5.20 ERA with a 5.09 FIP and is striking out just 5.6 batters per nine innings.

Fedde has been an average to below average starter for most of his career. But he’s at least a major-league arm, and if you squint hard enough, you’ll see a glimmer of upside, which is just icing on the cake for Atlanta at this point. I would not be shocked at all if he’s wearing a Braves uniform in a few days.”

Fedde isn’t going to offer the Braves much, but at this point, they desperately just need starting arms that can eat some innings.

As far as Grant Holmes, we don’t have the full diagnosis yet, but the writing appears to be on the wall. His 2025 campaign is finished, and it’s very likely he could miss all of 2026 as well, opening up another gaping hole the Braves must fill this offseason if they want to compete next year.
