Thursday night, Ronald Acuña Jr. was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year after returning from a second torn ACL surgery and hitting .290 with 21 homers and a .935 OPS over just 95 games.

If he retired today, Acuña would already go down as one of the best players in franchise history. He’s helped the club to a World Series, became the first player in MLB history to hit 40 homers and swipe 70 bags, and has an MVP award along with a Rookie of the Year award under his belt.

But Braves fans are hoping the show isn’t coming to an end anytime soon. Acuña has three more years of team control left on his contract and has said on several occasions that he wants to remain with the Braves for life, including today on Twitter/X.

Acuña hasn’t been shy about his affinity for the Braves organization, which helped mold him into the man he is today dating back to his teenage years. He wants to stay in Atlanta for the remainder of his career, but as Alex Anthopoulos recently reminded everyone at the MLB GM Meetings, at the end of the day, it’s still a business.

“It is business — always business,” Anthopoulos said. “Always business. Business means we see what happens.”

Ronald Acuña Jr. will be 30 years old when his current contract expires, and if he ever reaches free agency, the bidding is going to get crazy — the kind of bidding war the Braves have never been willing to participate in. He deserves to be paid like a top-five superstar in the sport, especially after signing such a team-friendly deal the first time around.

For that reason, it makes plenty of sense for the Braves to explore an extension as soon as possible, but that also doesn’t come without risk. Injuries are the one thing that have slowed Acuña down throughout his career. He’s spent considerable time on the IL and has undergone two ACL reconstructions. Committing that kind of money to a player with that injury history is an obvious gamble, but it’s also why an extension now could benefit both sides.

The Braves could lock Acuña in at a far more reasonable rate than if they let him hit the open market, and Acuña would secure generational wealth long before free agency arrives. He’s the type of player Anthopoulos should feel comfortable betting on, even knowing things don’t always go according to plan.
