Walt Weiss’ staff is coming together with the hiring of two more coaches. Tony Mansolino has been named the Braves’ third-base coach, and J.P. Martinez will be in charge of the bullpen.
“Mansolino, 43, joins Atlanta after serving the previous five seasons with the Baltimore Orioles on their major league staff,” The Braves announced in a press release. “He spent more than four years as the club’s third base coach before being named interim manager on May 17, 2025. The Newport Beach, California native guided Baltimore to a 60-59 record after his appointment. Prior to his Orioles tenure, Mansolino held multiple roles in Cleveland’s system from 2011-2020. He was a hitting coach (2011-2015), manager (2016-2019), and infield coordinator (2020) at various levels.
“Martinez, 43, was San Francisco’s pitching coach last season, a role he was promoted to in October 2024. Under his tutelage, the Giants’ bullpen posted the third-best ERA (3.44) in Major League Baseball. From 2021-2024, Martinez aided the club as an assistant pitching coach. While he was on staff, San Francisco pitched to the seventh-best ERA in MLB. Martinez first entered the affiliated coaching ranks in 2015, when he was named the rehab coordinator and GCL pitching coach in Minnesota’s system. He advanced to be the Single-A pitching coach from 2016-2017 and the assistant minor league pitching coordinator from 2018-2020 before departing for San Francisco.”
Mansolino and Martinez join Jeremy Hefner and Antoan Richardson as the first four hires of Walt Weiss’ staff, which is looking very attractive. Weiss might be an older manager — 61 years old — but he’s surrounding himself with some really bright young baseball minds that are highly respected across the league.
Moving forward, the Braves have still yet to hire a bench coach to replace Walt Weiss, and there hasn’t been any word on the status of hitting coach Tim Hyers. Although, he was handed a two-year contract last offseason, so there’s reason to believe he will be sticking around for at least one more season.
