Braves: Latest update on Grant Holmes is very encouraging

Grant Holmes last pitched on July 26th, and soon after, he was announced out for the season with a UCL injury. That typically means Tommy John surgery, which would have forced Holmes to miss all of 2026 as well. However, after receiving multiple opinions, it was determined he could try to avoid surgery altogether, and that’s the direction he chose.

According to Braves beat reporter Grant McAuley, Holmes has already started his throwing program less than two months since being shut down. He’ll ramp it up throughout the offseason, and the plan is to be ready come Spring Training next year.

Holmes was one of the Braves few bright spots in an otherwise lost 2025 campaign. After transitioning to the rotation full-time, he recorded a 3.99 ERA over 115 innings.

How the Braves decide to use Holmes in the future will be interesting. He’s proven to be a more than capable starting pitcher, but he’s also a filthy reliever, and keeping him healthy should be the club’s top priority. Assuming there are no setbacks in his recovery, I would imagine the Braves likely view him as a bullpen piece moving forward, a place where he can still be a very valuable contributor in 2026.
