We are about 48 hours from the trade deadline, and it’s become increasingly evident the Braves should be prioritizing additions to their bullpen, given there still seems to be no progress with Robert Suarez. Walt Weiss said again ahead of Friday’s game that Atlanta’s All-Star reliever has yet to throw a bullpen, and from the sound of it, he isn’t close to doing so.

Spencer Schwellenbach had four bullpen sessions in Florida and is back in Atlanta to throw in front more bullpens of the Braves.
Robert Suarez is still just playing catch.

Suarez has been out since mid-June with what the Braves are calling elbow and forearm inflammation. Further tests revealed no structural damage, but the fact that it’s been six weeks and he’s still nowhere close to returning is raising some red flags. Even when he does come back, there’s no telling whether the Braves will be getting the guy who was downright unhittable over the season’s first couple of months — pitching to a 0.56 ERA over 31 appearances.
That certainly has to factor into the equation heading into the deadline. The Braves’ bullpen is seemingly taxed every single night, forcing them to turn to fringe roster guys in high-leverage situations every other game. It feels like they have to operate as if whatever they get out of Suarez the rest of the way is icing on the cake.
