Braves: Walt Weiss has grim update on Spencer Schwellenbach

While Walt Weiss did have a positive update on Robert Suarez, who begins throwing tomorrow as he works his way back, the same can’t be said for Spencer Schwellenbach.

The 26-year-old right-hander has yet to make an appearance this season after undergoing elbow surgery during Spring Training. He began throwing in June and has progressed to bullpen work, but Weiss said Wednesday that Schwellenbach still isn’t feeling quite like himself, calling it an “uneven road back.”

Given Schwellenbach’s age, how important he is to the future of the organization, and the fact that he’s still not feeling 100%, there’s really no reason for the Braves to push things much further this year. It’s already highly unlikely he makes much of an impact. Even if he started a rehab assignment tomorrow, he wouldn’t be ready to rejoin the major-league club until mid-September.

Perhaps things take a turn for the better in the coming weeks. An appearance this season can’t be ruled out entirely just yet, but doubtful is probably the most appropriate way to describe it at this point.
