Hear me out: the Braves reuniting with Charlie Morton might actually make sense.
Even before the Chris Sale injury, Atlanta’s starting pitching depth was razor thin. Bryce Elder, while serviceable at times, is not a reliable starting pitcher at the major-league level, and now the Braves are also counting on a 20-year-old Didier Fuentes, who only has nine starts above the Low-A level in his career.
Alex Anthopoulos doesn’t need to make a big splash for a starting arm at this year’s trade deadline. The Braves have arguably the best 1-2-3 punch in baseball when Chris Sale is healthy. However, they could use a veteran innings eater, and Charlie Morton — even after a miserable start to the season — is proving he still has a little juice left in the tank at 41 years old.
Morton’s 2025 campaign could not have gotten off to a worse start. He began the year 0-5 with a 10.89 ERA, which led to the Orioles moving him to the bullpen. It didn’t get better for Morton immediately, but around the middle of May, something seemed to click. Several high-quality relief outings led to him returning to the rotation, and over his last five starts, he’s 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA.
Since May 10th, Morton boasts a 2.29 ERA and 2.31 FIP. He’s struck out 46 batters over 35.1 innings, and the stuff looks as crisp as ever.

Charlie Morton really is the exact type of arm the Braves should be targeting ahead of this year’s trade deadline. At 41 years old and on a one-year contract, he’s not going to fetch any top prospects, especially given his inconsistencies. And we all know how much Alex Anthopoulos absolutely loves his retreads.
Most of the time, they haven’t worked out. But in this instance, I can see a case for why the Braves would be calling. The Orioles are currently 10 games under .500 and have the third-worst record in the American League, ahead of only the Athletics and White Sox. Most expect them to sell if things don’t get better quickly, and a Braves reunion with Charlie Morton doesn’t sound so ridiculous all of a sudden.
