The Braves lost two key pieces from their 2024 rotation in Max Fried and Charlie Morton and are feeling the effects of it. Atlanta’s depth in that area is essentially non-existent and has unfortunately been tested to its core with the injuries to Spencer Strider and Reynaldo Lopez.
Meanwhile, Max Fried is the early favorite to win the AL Cy Young award. He’s 5-0 with a ridiculous 1.19 ERA through his first six starts with the Yankees.
However, Charlie Morton’s experience with the Orioles hasn’t gone quite the same. The now 41-year-old is a remarkable 0-6 through seven appearances, boasting a putrid 9.45 ERA with a 2.175 WHIP. He’s allowing an even two long balls per nine innings and setting a career-high for walk rate, which has led to the Orioles moving him to a bullpen role until he shows he can efficiently get out major-league batters.
Charlie Morton signed a one-year, $15 million contract with Baltimore in the offseason, a deal most thought the Braves should have matched, given his production over the last several years. But as the saying goes, it’s better to be a year early than a year late.
In this case, that applies to both the Braves and Charlie Morton himself. The Braves appear to have dodged a bullet by not re-signing Morton, even if they do have starting pitching concerns of their own. Morton, on the other hand, was mulling retirement and constantly talked about how he didn’t want the game to retire him.
That appears to be what’s happening right now in Baltimore. However, Braves fans should keep an eye out for how the Orioles handle this situation. If Charlie Morton continues to struggle, it’s possible he will be designated for assignment, and Alex Anthopoulos will surely be interested.
