Food courier arrested after pointing gun at customers in Brookhaven restaurant

The Brookhaven Police Department arrested a 36-year-old food courier and charged him with an armed aggravated assault in connection with an incident that occurred on Feb. 20 at a restaurant located at 2168 Briarcliff Road.

Maze T. Coburn, of Lithonia, became upset over a delay in an order he was to pick up, left the location, and returned with a handgun equipped with a green laser sight, according to a report released by Brookhaven Police.

“He allegedly pointed the firearm toward the front window while patrons, including a juvenile, were inside, before fleeing in a silver Ford Mustang,” the report said.

The suspect was taken into custody on Feb. 24 near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and I-285 with the help of Gwinnett County Police.

“Pointing a firearm at a business where families are present is reckless and unacceptable,” said Chief Brandon Gurley in the release. “We will continue to act swiftly to protect our community and hold offenders accountable.”

Coburn has been charged with five counts of aggravated assault and one count of cruelty to children in the third degree. He has a history of criminal activity in the county, according to DeKalb Jail records, including an arrest in 2021 for aggravated assault with a weapon, possession of marijuana and criminal trespassing in 2023, and failure to appear and battery in 2024.

According to the jail records, Coburn is still in custody as of Feb. 26.
