Time to break out the muffins?
Wednesday, Sept. 23 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. This summer, which officially lasted two solid calendar years, may finally be over.
As per tradition, here is my healthy pumpkin muffin recipe to ring in the season:
• 1 box of spice cake mix
• 1 can of canned pumpkin
• 1/2- 3/4 c. water
Mix all the ingredients. Spoon batter into lined or lightly coated muffin tins. Bake 20 minutes (or so) at 350 degrees. Delicious hot or cold. For those who think healthy recipes are for rich people who hate themselves, add mini-chocolate chips into the batter, top with a sprinkling of sea salt, bake, and add a dollop of cream cheese icing after cooling. You do you.

Cancer, cures, and concentric circles
At CURE Childhood Cancer’s 13th annual Believe Ball on Sat., Oct. 3, the story of a Dunwoody cancer survivor will come full circle when he receives an award bearing the name of the doctor who saved his life.
Matt Gephardt will receive the Ragab Spirit of Hope award, named after Dr. Abdel Ragab, Emory University’s first pediatric oncologist and founder of CURE Childhood Cancer – and fittingly, the man who treated then 17-month-old Gephardt in 1971 after he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma.
“Matt is a true champion for children with cancer,” said Kristin Connor, CEO of CURE. “As a toddler, Matt received groundbreaking treatment by Dr. Ragab in St. Louis (before Ragab moved to Atlanta) … He was given a 10% chance of success, but it has now been more than 50 years since his treatment, and Matt is a true example of resilience.”

State Farm buildings on the block
Park Center II and III, the Southeast hub for State Farm, is for sale, according to multiple media outlets, totaling 1.1 million square feet, which could net up to $450 million.
Dunwoody Economic Development Director Michael Starling provided more details on the possible sale of the buildings.
“KDC is listing the approximately 1.1 million-square-foot State Farm campus for sale, specifically Building 2 and Building 3,” Starling said in a statement to Rough Draft. “Building 1 is owned by a South Korean Bank. While the property continues to be commonly identified as the State Farm campus, the office buildings have not been owned by State Farm for many years.”

Judi Carlson IS your neighbor
Neighbors Bank announced the top 10 finalists for its inaugural Neighbor of the Year contest, a nationwide search to celebrate the everyday people who make their communities better, and one of the people on the list is Dunwoody’s Judi Carlson.
Carlson (pictured above, second from left) has been instrumental with her work at Malachi’s Storehouse in Dunwoody, a local food pantry dedicated to fighting hunger in the community.
“During the pandemic alone, Judi helped distribute over 500,000 pounds of food to more than 2,700 households,” the release said. “She was nominated by Lynn Deutsch, the sitting mayor of Dunwoody, which speaks volumes about the impact she’s had.”
Voting is over, and the winner will be revealed on Sept. 28. In the meantime, here’s the story.
Create Dunwoody Explorefest
Create Dunwoody will host the first Explorefest on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Williamsburg Shopping Center at Mt. Vernon and Jett Ferry Roads, featuring an open mic showcase with youth bands and solo performers, a passport challenge with prizes, a mini train, and activities throughout the shopping center.
Travel experts will also be on hand to help attendees learn more about cruises and vacation planning. Dunwoody High School Finance Academy students will showcase their businesses and sell products and services during the event.
Immediately following Explorefest, the Dunwoody School of Rock will host a ribbon-cutting and open house from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., giving attendees a chance to tour the new location and learn more about its music programs.
