At this point, it’s impossible to call the Falcons anything other than the most disappointing team in the National Football League.
Sure, there are worse teams — even if not by much. The Saints proved that last week, and the Titans are an absolute dumpster fire. But this is a Falcons organization that has preached playoffs since the moment Raheem Morris walked into Flowery Branch. They never ran from expectations after last year’s eight-win season, and they even spent a 2026 first-round pick to move back into the first round this year because they believed they were that close to contending in what remains one of the most wide-open divisions in football.
And for a moment, it looked like they were right. Atlanta sat at 3–2 after a brutal early schedule, capped off with a statement win against the Bills on Monday Night Football. Now they’re 4–8, with embarrassing losses to the Dolphins, Jets, and Panthers (twice). It’s almost unfathomable. Which begs the question: is there any path where Raheem Morris survives this?
Arthur Blank is not known for having a quick trigger finger. If anything, he holds on too long, especially if he likes the person involved. And Raheem Morris is as likable as they come. Unfortunately, he’s also a dismal head coach, perfectly represented by his 33-55 combined record between the Bucs and Falcons. Blank could’ve stomached another eight- or nine-win season, just missing the playoffs, chalking it up to growing pains with a young quarterback.
But what Blank cannot stomach is embarrassment, and even more so, irrelevance. And that’s exactly what the Falcons have become.
Under Morris and GM Terry Fontenot, Atlanta has zigged when the rest of the league zagged. They handed Kirk Cousins $180 million, then drafted Michael Penix Jr. weeks later — something no franchise had ever attempted. It was supposed to be their Mona Lisa: solve the present and the future at once. Instead, they look like the punchline — no answer at quarterback, no first-round pick in 2026, and one of the worst records in football.
The events that led to this point have made the Falcons a league-wide joke. They’re unwatchable on Sundays and directionless beyond them. That’s not all Raheem Morris’ fault, but it’s hard not to look at the situation and come to the conclusion that a complete reset is the only reasonable course of action at the end of the season.
