Ken Rosenthal on Corey Seager being an option for the Braves

It’s easy to see why the Braves quickly moved to acquire Mauricio Dubon to kick off the offseason. He cost essentially nothing, raises the floor at shortstop, and could serve as an ultra-valuable super-utility piece if Atlanta lands a better option before the season starts.

The Braves should still look to re-sign Ha-Seong Kim if the price is right, but with Scott Boras representing him, that process is likely to drag deep into the offseason. The trade market does offer a few intriguing possibilities if they become available — none more so than five-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion Corey Seager. It’s been well-documented that the Rangers need to cut payroll this winter, and while most don’t expect that to include their star shortstop, they’ll probably at least listen.

The unfortunate part is that Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday that the Braves are one of eight teams on Seager’s no-trade list.

“Corey Seager, owed $186 million over the next six years from a Texas club looking to reduce payroll, theoretically could have been an option,” Rosenthal writes. “But according to major-league sources briefed on his contract, the Braves are one of eight teams on Seager’s no-trade list.”

That’s a bit shocking, to be honest. The Braves are one of the most well-represented franchises in the entire sport, and they’d immediately be at the forefront of the World Series conversation with Seager in the fold. On top of that, he’s from North Carolina — Braves country. Atlanta must have really done a number on him when they knocked his Dodgers out of the playoffs in 2021, which ended up being his final year in Los Angeles.

With that said, the Braves landing on Seager’s no-trade list doesn’t automatically take them out of the running. These things can be worked around if all sides are committed to finding a solution. It just adds another obstacle to a potential blockbuster, and those are already difficult enough to pull off as it is.
