You don’t tune out the noise of an upcoming tilt with Alabama, Jared Curtis’s return (or not) to Athens, and general Homecoming distractions to romp over the vaunted Vanderbilt Commodores without a total team effort. Yet even then, some players are bound to rise above the noise and confusion, to get a glimpse beyond this illusion, and soar ever higher than the rest. Those stalwart sons of the gridiron are your MVDs: the Most Valuable ‘Dawgs from Georgia’s 38-14 win over Vandy.
Offense: Dwight Phillips, Jr. Look, Gunner Stockton had a wonderful day throwing the ball. And Landon Roldan had a pleasantly productive afternoon with a touchdown and a long catch to set up another. But Peanut the Destroyer was the one who spread the Commodores too thin to recover. He had 75 yards receiving and 27 on the ground, scored one touchdown and all but scored another, and had a run for a key third down conversion.
Defense: Ellis Robinson, IV. The secondary in general gave Bulldogs fans some reason for concern in this one. But Robinson remains very difficult to throw on, and his third quarter interception shut the door on the ‘Dores and paved the way for the Red and Black’s final touchdown, putting this one definitively out of reach.
Special Teams: Peyton Woodring. Drew Miller had a nice punt to get the Bulldogs out of the shadow of their own endzone. But Woodring hit a 39 yard field goal to extend the second half lead to three scores, and his 5 for 5 performance on extra points put him even further in the lead for the most consecutive extra points in Bulldog history.
As always, we’d welcome your nominations in the comments. Until later…
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
