This was a no-brainer, and the delay probably has something to do with the Falcons trying to get an extension with Drake London.
It would save Atlanta money in the long run, and it would mitigate risk for London, but if I’m the emerging star, I’m betting on myself. If London puts together a 2025 campaign that many expect, he’ll be in line for quite the hefty payday.
The 8th overall pick from the 2022 draft has turned into one of the NFL’s most productive receivers in his third season, finishing fourth in receiving yards with 1,271 to go along with nine touchdowns.
Almost a quarter of that came in the final two weeks with Michael Penix Jr. under center. Their chemistry is obvious, particularly in the season finale, as Drake London finished with 187 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
With Penix now at the helm, London should be chomping at the bit. He was clearly Penix’s top target in his three-game sample size. London was targeted on 45% of Penix’s first reads. He received six of Penix’s eight end zone targets, and Drake London averaged 117 yards per game with the southpaw.
The Falcons have a budding superstar connection in Michael Penix Jr. and Drake London.
