This doesn’t necessarily mean the Hawks are totally out on Kuminga. They are still free to sign him as a free agent if his market turns out to be much cooler than expected, but it’s evident there wasn’t much of a market for him at all at a $24.3 million price point, even if it was only a one-year deal.
Atlanta acquired Kuminga at this year’s trade deadline, sending Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors. He played a pivotal role down the stretch and was easily their best option off the bench in the playoffs, even if his play was a little erratic at times. In 16 games for the Hawks, Kuminga averaged 12.3 points on 47.6% shooting from the field and 34.6% from beyond the arc to go along with 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists.
The decision gives the Hawks a bit more financial flexibility to work with as free agency begins, but it also leaves them with another gaping hole on the wing that must be filled. That now becomes a top priority, along with adding some more size in the frontcourt, which they reportedly are attempting to accomplish via trade.
