Robert Suarez set to take massive step toward returning

It’s been nearly impossible to get an update on when Robert Suarez could return to the Braves, but we finally have one. Ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Mets, Walt Weiss said the All-Star reliever will begin throwing on Thursday.

Suarez has been out since mid-June, so he still has quite a lengthy process ahead before rejoining the club. He’ll slowly build up until he’s ready to throw bullpens, and he’ll likely need at least a few rehab appearances after that.

The good news is he’s a reliever. He doesn’t have to be stretched out the way a starting pitcher would over an entire month. Once he’s throwing bullpens, he’s much closer to contributing almost immediately.

The Braves still believe that will happen sometime this season, and for Alex Anthopoulos’ sake, they better hope so. If Robert Suarez doesn’t pitch again this year and the Braves didn’t add to their bullpen at the trade deadline, it will go down as a horrendous missed opportunity. The pairing of Suarez and Raisel Iglesias is vital to Atlanta’s hopes of getting back to the World Series and winning for the first time since 2021.
