The Restoration of the Forsyth Fountain

The historic Forsyth Park fountain is undergoing a major restoration project.

History of the Forsyth Fountain

Located at the center of Forsyth Park, the iconic Forsyth Fountain is not only a popular landmark but also an important piece of history in Savannah. Built in 1858, the fountain became a symbol of the city, attracting tourists from all over the world. Named after Governor John Forsyth, the fountain is an impressive 30 feet tall. It features a combination of neo-classical and Victorian style elements. Four decorative statues surround a grand marble basin centerpiece. Each symbolizes a key aspect of life: art, science, rivers, and agriculture.

 Built to give the people of Savannah access to clean drinking water, the Forsyth Fountain provided water during a difficult and dangerous time. Yellow fever was sweeping through the city, making safe water an essential tool in slowing the spread of the disease. For many, the fountain became more than a water source—it was a symbol of relief and hope during a period of great struggle.

Project Timeline

Mayor Johnson stated that the fountain is expected to be restored and returned to its original location by August 31. However, to accommodate potential delays, city staff have confirmed that steps have been taken to avoid scheduling weddings or special events using the fountain as a backdrop during its restoration through the end of the year.

This is the fountain’s first major restoration since 1988. It is a centerpiece of the city’s history and charm. This restoration will maintain one of Savannah’s most treasured landmarks for generations to come.
