Update: Atlanta Police apprehend suspect in fatal Beltline stabbing

Atlanta Police have apprehended the suspect wanted for a fatal stabbing on the Atlanta Beltline on Thursday afternoon.

WSB-TV reports that an hours-long manhunt ended when two officers spotted the suspect on a bicycle in Midtown and quickly determined he was the one wanted for the homicide. The suspect’s identity has not been released, but he was transported to APD headquarters.

The incident occurred near the Montgomery Ferry Road overpass in Ansley Park around 12:10 p.m. A woman died from her injuries after arriving by ambulance at Grady Hospital, according to police.

At an afternoon press conference, APD Chief Darin Schierbaum described the suspect as “a Black male wearing all black with lettering on the back of his shirt that is orange and white, riding an orange bicycle.”

A BOLO notice posted by the Atlanta Police Department on social media.

Schierbaum said the same individual may have attacked an employee of the United States Postal Service with a rock at the Plasters Avenue post office just before the Beltline stabbing.

“We believe that individual left that location, traveled on a bicycle to the location where we’re standing, committed the knife attack, and then left this location traveling southbound on the Beltline,” Schierbaum said at the press conference, calling both incidents “random.”

APD said the “infrastructure of cameras on the Beltline is robust” and police have clear photographs of the suspect who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. While helicopters circled Midtown and Ansley Park, APD worked with nearby schools to safely dismiss students.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
