Canopy at Crooked Creek
Friday, Oct. 9 — Hey, it’s Hayden with my weekly Norcross newsletter. Expect more rain and wind this weekend as the first hurricane of the Atlantic season, Isaias, hits the northern Gulf Coast late tonight into early Saturday morning.
For Isaias weather updates, check out the latest forecast information from the National Weather Service’s Peachtree City office. And follow Rough Draft’s ongoing coverage of the storm and its impact on the metro here.
The Los Angeles Dodgers eliminated the Atlanta Braves in the National League Division Series on Oct. 7, bringing college and professional football to the forefront in the minds of Southern sports fans. Instead of a truce before Braves playoff games, rival college football fans from around the South can go back to strongly disliking one another.
Speaking of which, the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs visit the No. 6 Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa tomorrow night. Both teams are closely monitoring Hurricane Isaias and its path once it makes landfall between coastal Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. As of now, the game is still set for Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
Quick roundup of things to know:
The city canceled its annual Cleanup and Recycling Day, previously scheduled for tomorrow morning, Oct. 10, due to forecasted inclement weather. The announcement said it will be rescheduled before the end of the year.
WSB-TV reported that someone won more than $35,000 from a Georgia Lottery ticket sold in Norcross at the BP Food Mart, 5395 Buford Highway.
Catch “Wicked: For Good,” Oct. 12, part of Movie Mondays at the Norcross Cultural Arts & Community Center at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m.
Have a great weekend,
Hayden

Canopy at Crooked Creek developers pivot toward owner-occupied condos
Bruce Fernald, spokesperson for the proposed redevelopment of a 19-acre site between Atlantic and Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, said his team’s rezoning effort will proceed after they complete new designs for owner-occupied condos.
After hearing from some in the community about their opposition to apartments and preference for owner-occupied housing, Fernald said he’s listening and banking on market demand.
“We were originally planning another 150 units of age-targeted apartments behind Jefferson Plaza,” Fernald said. “What we learned and how we’re pivoting is that there is a real need in Norcross and surrounding communities for condominium flats that would be ownership, rather than rental, for those of us empty nesters.”

George Gershwin’s toe-tapping tunes at Symphony Hall
SPONSORED BY ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Known as “the great American opera,” George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess has resonated through American culture since its 1935 premiere. No one could write a toe-tapping tune like Gershwin, and you can hear his music in concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra on Oct. 22 and 24.
Not quite jazz and not quite classical, Gershwin’s watershed Rhapsody in Blue offers irresistible fun at this concert featuring jazz pianist Sullivan Fortner. After intermission, the orchestra drops into overdrive for Carl Nielsen’s indomitable Fourth Symphony, nicknamed The Inextinguishable.

New floral garden commemorates Rosalynn Carter at Best Friend Park
The Gateway85 Community Improvement District honored late former first lady Rosalynn Carter with a new garden of 1,946 flowers at Best Friend Park, a nod to the year she married Jimmy Carter.
The garden planting on Friday, Oct. 2, was part of Gwinnett County’s second annual Jimmy Carter Day celebration, complementing the CID’s mural honoring the late president, unveiled last year.
Gateway85’s first major public art project is a colorful, abstract mural featuring President Carter along the boulevard that bears his name. Best Friend Park is a 43-acre park and recreational area in unincorporated Gwinnett County, feet from the Norcross city limits.

City accepts Piedmont Pathway concept report
The Norcross City Council approved a couple of items at its Oct. 5 meeting that advance plans for a major path and park project and support an ongoing citywide public art initiative.
Council members unanimously accepted the draft Norcross Piedmont Pathway Concept Report for final publication, positioning the city to compete for future federal grant funding.
Public Works Director Len Housley said the council’s acceptance of the report does not commit construction funding. The next anticipated grant application opportunity through the Atlanta Regional Commission is in early 2028, with awards expected in 2029.

Norcross City Council debate canceled after candidate’s family emergency
The Norcross City Council debate scheduled for Oct. 6 was canceled after one of the two candidates running in the Nov. 3 special election had to leave town amid a family emergency.
Norcross PDC, a weekly community forum organized by Chuck Paul, organized the debate before early voting in the special election begins on Tuesday, Oct. 13. Both candidates are former elected officials and well known in the city of about 19,000.
Paul told Rough Draft Atlanta that he is working to reschedule before the Nov. 3 election, but “the calendar is closing in.”
