Bijan Robinson not getting more OPOY love is a travesty

Every time Bijan Robinson steps on the field for a primetime matchup, he proves he’s the best offensive skill position player in the league. That was the case again on Monday Night Football against the Rams, as he went for 195 yards on the ground and added 34 more through the air to lead the Falcons to a 27-24 win.

Bijan Robinson’s Numbers In Primetime

Week 2 vs. Vikings: 143 rushing yards, 25 receiving yards

Week 6 vs. Bills: 170 rushing yards, 68 receiving yards, 1 touchdown

Week 7 vs. 49ers: 40 rushing yards, 52 receiving yards, 1 touchdown

Week 15 vs. Bucs: 93 rushing yards, 82 receiving yards, 1 touchdown

Week 17 vs. Rams: 195 rushing yards, 34 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns

Total (5 games): 641 rushing yards, 261 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns

Robinson is averaging 128.2 rushing yards, over 50 receiving yards, and a touchdown in primetime matchups — a microcosm of how he’s carried the Falcons offense throughout the entire season.

His 229 yards from scrimmage on Monday Night Football gives him 2,255 yards on the year, breaking the Falcons franchise record and putting him within striking distance of Chris Johnson’s NFL record for scrimmage yards. If he somehow racks up 254 yards next Sunday against the Saints, he will officially have the best all-around season by a running back in NFL history.

Yet somehow, Robinson is currently 100/1 to win the NFL Offensive Player of the Year award.

Of course, this is no disrespect to any of the guys ahead of Robinson. They are all superstars having fantastic seasons on teams that will be competing in the postseason. Every single one of them is deserving of hardware at season’s end.

With that being said, nobody is having a better season than Bijan Robinson. He is pacing the league in yards from scrimmage, nearly 200 yards ahead of Christian McCaffrey, and he’s doing it on 51 fewer touches. The only reason he isn’t -10000 to win the award is because he plays for the Falcons, and that is exactly why this is such a travesty.

Atlanta has unfortunately become a pit where amazing careers go to waste. Raheem Morris hasn’t been shy about calling Robinson the best all-around player in football at any position, and it’s hard to argue after yet another stellar performance on Monday night. He’s also an even better person off the field.

Robinson should be one of the faces of the NFL. He is everything good about the league, but that is never going to happen until the Falcons start winning football games.
