According to Braves beat reporter Grant McAuley, Bryce Elder had his knee checked and a minor surgery was performed. He’s expected to miss 3-4 weeks and hopes to return to pitch in the postseason.
Elder deserves a lot of credit for what he’s done this year. The Braves desperately needed someone to step up in the wake of several major injuries to the rotation, and he’s gone out and delivered every five nights more often than not. Without him, the Braves might not be sitting here in first place today.
That said, acting as if Elder will return in a month and make an impact in the playoffs is probably not a realistic scenario. He was already a fringe guy for the roster — not somebody who was likely to start a postseason game, and unlikely to contribute out of the bullpen as well, given he has zero experience as a reliever.
Elder’s season is almost certainly over unless some unexpected injuries arise down the line.
