Amid their series with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Braves made a couple of roster moves.
Bailey Falter has been selected to the major-league roster. In a corresponding move, Elieser Hernandez has been designated for assignment. Additionally, Reynaldo Lopez returns from his rehabilitation assignment. He will start tonight, and Bryce Elder has been placed on the IL after undergoing knee surgery.
With Elder’s season likely over, Lopez has a chance to earn a spot on the postseason roster, whether that’s as a starter or out of the bullpen. In 71.2 innings so far this season, he boasts a respectable 3.64 ERA.
Falter takes Hernandez’s spot on the roster, and it will be the first time we see him in a Braves uniform after he was acquired from the Royals at the trade deadline. In limited appearances for Kansas City, the numbers were an eyesore — a 13.97 ERA over 9.2 innings.
However, Falter has been lights out for Gwinnett, allowing zero runs over 10.2 innings. I wouldn’t expect to see him very often in high-leverage situations, but the Braves have made Tyler Mahle look like a Cy Young candidate since he made the move to Atlanta. Perhaps they’ve similarly helped Falter with his repertoire, and he can show why he’s deserving of a spot on the postseason roster.
