Braves make more peculiar roster moves amid series with Phillies

What happened on Thursday night in Philadelphia was an embarrassment, even for the 2025 Braves. The Phillies nearly hung 20 runs and won by more than two touchdowns to kick off football season, with Kyle Schwarber clobbering four home runs.

What’s even crazier is the Braves held an early three-run lead in the first inning, but Cal Quantrill, who was making his second start for the team, gave up nine runs on nine hits, four of which left the yard. One would hope that would be the last time he ever pitches with a tomahawk across his chest.

However, the Braves have not released him yet; instead, they optioned Austin Cox and Wander Suero to AAA Gwinnett after the game. In corresponding moves, John Brebbia and Nathan Wiles are back on the active roster.

The fact that Cal Quantrill wasn’t sent packing before last night’s game ended is a real head-scratcher, but what’s even more puzzling is the Braves’ refusal to give Hayden Harris an opportunity at the major-league level.

It’s nearly September, and the Braves are 58 games out of first place. Harris is a 26-year-old prospect that has posted a 0.37 ERA in 20 appearances for the Gwinnett Stripers this year. What more do the Braves need to see, and what do they have to lose?

Hopefully, Harris gets a chance before the end of the season. He’s more than deserving, and the club should want to evaluate what they might have in him to better gauge what they need to buy in free agency.
