Ahead of their series with the Cubs, the Braves made a notable roster move. Owen Murphy is back with the major-league club. In a corresponding move, Bailey Falter has been designated for assignment.
The rookie Murphy showed some promise earlier in the season with the major-league club over a small sample size, posting a 4.05 ERA over 6.2 innings. However, he really seems to have found his footing down in Gwinnett, giving up just four combined runs over his last five starts.
According to Mark Bowman, Murphy will be utilized out of the bullpen over the next couple of days, suggesting he’s more of a placeholder with the Braves being short on relief arms.
Falter getting designated for assignment is a bit of poor luck. The Braves acquired him in a trade with the Royals at the deadline and immediately optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett, where he did not give up a run over 10.2 innings. That earned him a call to the major-league club, where he also didn’t give up a run over 3.1 innings. He’s tossed 14 scoreless innings in the Braves organization, but unfortunately that was not enough to keep him around with the team needing fresh arms against a potent offensive club like the Cubs.
It’s possible Falter clears waivers and remains with the organization. At the very least, he’s solid organizational depth the Braves could use as the season wanes to keep some of their better arms fresh for the postseason.
