At one point not long ago, Isaac Collins was a slight favorite over the field, but it’s become a two-man race with just over a week to play.
Cade Horton has really come out of nowhere to become the favorite. On June 27th, he surrendered seven earned runs over four innings, which ballooned his ERA up to 4.80. Since then, however, he’s been arguably the best pitcher in baseball, pitching to the tune of a 1.29 ERA over his last 13 starts.
From start to finish, Drake Baldwin has been right near the top of the race, which is a testament to his consistency. He’s had his fair share of bumps in the road, but they haven’t been nearly as harsh as most rookies. Baldwin leads Horton in the WAR department — 2.5 to 1.9 — but a slower end to the season combined with the Braves being well out of the playoff race for several months undoubtedly plays a factor when talking about narratives.
Over 114 games, Baldwin is hitting .266 with 16 homers — good for a .771 OPS. There’s still hope he could end the season with some hardware, which would net the Braves an extra draft pick at the end of the first round, but it does feel as if this race is close to being decided.
Who knows how it might have been different if the Braves decided to give Baldwin everyday playing time earlier in the year, instead of wasting opportunities by playing Marcell Ozuna in a lost season, who will be a free agent at season’s end.
