However, it has since been announced that Grant Holmes will replace Bryce Elder and pitch on Monday.
Because Holmes’ outing on Wednesday was cut short due to a rain delay, it should feel like he’s on extra rest come Monday.
But this decision also represents something a bit more. There has been nonstop talk about who the Braves will utilize to start games come the postseason. A lot of people have suggested Bryce Elder, but this should tell you everything you need to know. The Braves don’t seriously think Elder is capable of handling a playoff start. If they did, they wouldn’t have swapped him for Grant Holmes in the biggest series of the season to date.
That’s nothing against Elder. The Braves wouldn’t be in the position they are today without him, but the club has better options, and they clearly believe Grant Holmes is one of them.
