The lengthy process it took to get here is a little surprising, but the candidate is not.
It might not be the flashy hire some fans were hoping for — and for those who lost faith in the organization because of Brian Snitker, this move certainly won’t inspire confidence — but it’s exactly what the Braves have done for decades: hire from within.
Walt Weiss spent time with the Braves as a player from 1998 to 2000 before retiring and beginning his coaching career with the Colorado Rockies. In 2012, he was named the Rockies’ manager, a position he held through the 2016 season, compiling a 283–365 record. Not exactly an elite winning percentage, but it’s worth noting that the Rockies have been a dysfunctional organization for most of their existence.
Ahead of the 2018 season, Weiss was hired by Brian Snitker to serve as the Braves’ bench coach, a role he’s held for the past eight years. Now, he’ll get the opportunity to manage the Braves himself — a team looking to rebound from one of the most disappointing seasons in recent memory.
