The Braves took the field Wednesday afternoon in hopes of reaching the .500 mark for the first time all season after beginning the 2025 campaign 0-7.
The odds were in their favor, too, with reigning NL Cy Young award winner Chris Sale on the bump against the worst team in baseball, the Colorado Rockies, who had just four wins in 29 attempts coming into Wednesday’s matchup.
Unfortunately, the Braves offense, which has been elite over the last three weeks, had no answer for Chase Dollander and the rest of the Rockies bullpen. Atlanta mustered just three hits on the afternoon, scratching across one run after scoring 14 runs in the first two games of the series.
Which is unfortunate, because Chris Sale turned in by far the best start of his season, going seven innings and allowing just two runs with 10 strikeouts. He seemed to get stronger the deeper he went as well, touching 97 on the radar gun multiple times in the seventh inning, easing concerns about his declining velocity. If you can even call it that. Coming into Wednesday, Chris Sale’s average fastball velocity was 94.4 MPH this year, compared to 94.8 MPH last season.
However, with the loss, Sale made a bit of unfortunate history, becoming the first pitcher in MLB history to have 10 strikeouts with no walks at Coors Field and lose.
Chris Sale is the first pitcher ever to have a start with 10+ K and 0 BB at Coors Field and lose.

Remarkably, there have only been 20 instances of pitchers recording 10 strikeouts with zero walks in Coors Field history. In those games, their teams were 17-3, but Chris Sale is the first one to get hit with a loss.
In the 20 previous instances of 10+ K and 0 BB in a start at Coors Field, pitchers were 16-0 (with the teams going 17-3). https://t.co/GBrRYVc8PB

That about sums up the Braves’ strange first month of the season. At least, nobody can say this team has been boring.
