Falcons defense faces another potentially season-ending injury

The Falcons suffered a few notable injuries in Sunday’s 20-13 loss to the Steelers, one of which could be season ending.

According to Ian Rapoport, Da’Shawn Hand is believed to have suffered a torn quad that could require surgery.

Hand played sparingly on Sunday before going down with the injury, seeing the field for just seven snaps. Despite that, the Falcons defense — particularly when it comes to stopping the run — was among the bright spots against the Steelers, who managed just 58 yards on the ground on 21 attempts.

That was a problem area for the Falcons a year ago, and they spent a lot of their resources this offseason focusing on getting bigger along the interior defensive front. Still, this is a pretty thin group that really couldn’t afford to lose a significant piece like Hand so early in the year, especially after already losing Jalon Walker for the season to a torn ACL.

With this news, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich‘s job just got that much more difficult. The Falcons defense played about as well as it possibly could have on Sunday, and they still lost by seven points to a team that’s far from a legitimate contender. The offense must be miles better moving forward, because expecting that kind of result every week from a defense that’s already down three starters is not realistic.
