Gervon Dexter Sr. extension adds more excitement to a dominant Falcons defensive line

Matt Ryan, Ian Cunningham, and this new regime have had no problem spending frivolously when it comes to contract extensions.

Bijan Robinson and Drake London both received top-of-market deals this offseason. That was going to happen no matter who was in charge, with Robinson being the best running back in the league and London establishing himself as a top-10 wide receiver. But the Falcons also made Matthew Bergeron the highest-paid guard in football, and he’s nowhere close to the top player at his position, suggesting they really don’t care about outside opinions. They’re going to trust their gut when it comes to players inside the building.

Now they’ve done it again, handing defensive tackle Gervon Dexter Sr. a massive four-year contract extension worth $78 million, with $46.5 million in guarantees.

Dexter was acquired by the Falcons in August for Clark Phillips III and a fifth-round pick, as the team really got aggressive in rebuilding its interior defensive line during the offseason.

The results have spoken for themselves throughout the first three weeks. Atlanta’s pass rush has actually improved from a pressure standpoint over a year ago, when they had 57 sacks — the second-most in the league. And they’re doing it without Jalon Walker and James Pearce Jr.

Dexter is a primary reason for that, leading all defensive tackles in pressure rate (20.5%) and sitting sixth in pressures (15).

“Gervon is a young, ascending talent whose power, disruption and impact along the defensive line are difficult to find,” Ian Cunningham said, via the team’s website. “What’s been just as impressive is the growth he’s shown off the field as a man and a father. His passion for the game and commitment to his teammates are qualities we value highly, and we’re excited to keep him as an important part of our defense moving forward. I also want to thank Drew and Jason Rosenhaus for their communication and partnership throughout this process.”

The Falcons will face some much better offenses moving forward, starting with the Saints on Monday Night Football. But through three weeks, it’s tough to find a defensive front that’s been more disruptive, and what makes it all the more tantalizing is the age of the players the Falcons are getting production from.

Dexter is 24 years old. Maason Smith is 23, and Brandon Dorlus is 25. Add in James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker when they return, and this group is set up for success for a very long time. That’s something we haven’t been able to say about the Falcons in multiple decades.
