It’s not the All-Star break for everybody, as two injured Braves — Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ha-Seong Kim — began their rehab assignments on Monday in the Florida Complex League.
The level of excitement surrounding the two couldn’t be on more opposite ends of the spectrum. The Braves are a completely different team without Ronald Acuña Jr., and not in a good way. Since he went down on June 9th, Atlanta has lost 19 of 29 games. He’s desperately needed back in the lineup, but don’t expect the Braves to push anything. They must do everything in their power to ensure he’s healthy for the home stretch, and he’s now injured the same hamstring twice.
On the other hand, Braves fans could probably do without Ha-Seong Kim playing another game for the team — and they may get their wish. He’s straight up robbed the Braves of $20 million after signing a one-year deal in the offseason, hitting just .068 over 73 at-bats this season without a single extra-base hit.
Given that Jim Jarvis has looked pretty damn good in a small sample size, this rehab assignment is Kim’s last chance to prove he deserves a roster spot at all. Perform or a DFA is in his near future, but yesterday was an encouraging start, as he homered and added a single in three at-bats.
Also of note, veteran Andrew McCutchen — who signed a minor-league contract with the Braves — was part of the game as well, going 0-for-2 with a walk.
