Hawks are “real-deal suitor” for Anthony Davis

The Hawks have been at the forefront of the conversation when it comes to potential suitors for Anthony Davis, and it appears it’s more than just smoke. Both Chris Haynes and Marc Stein reported over the weekend that Atlanta is a “real-deal suitor” for the 10-time All-Star and NBA champion.

“I am hearing the same: The Hawks are a real-deal suitor for Davis. Just how far, though, are they willing to go in terms of a Davis offer,” Stein writes for The Stein Line.

“Haynes also reported that Trae Young would not be included in such a swap, but that creates potential financial obstacles for a franchise not exactly known for lavish spending.

“Davis is owed $58.5 million next season and is likewise known to be eager to secure an extension in August when he becomes eligible for one … whether that’s with the Mavericks or a team that acquires him.”

From a fit perspective, Davis would certainly help mask the Hawks biggest deficiency right now, which is stopping opponents from putting the ball in the bucket. He’s been named to five different All-Defensive teams and, even approaching 33 years old, would instantly give the Hawks some credibility on that end of the floor.

The financial ramifications and potential trade package are a little more difficult to envision. The Mavericks, who still have Kyrie Irving signed through next season, likely aren’t that interested in acquiring Trae Young. But it’s also hard to see the Hawks paying both Young and Anthony Davis.

It’s possible Atlanta could acquire Davis and keep Young through the remainder of the season, but with Young holding a near $50 million player option that he could opt into, there’s a scenario where things don’t work out and Atlanta is stuck paying them nearly $110 million combined next season.

However, it’s also possible the Hawks look to move Trae Young in another trade, which is what several NBA insiders have been reporting leading up to the deadline.

“The Hawks certainly are indicating that they’re looking for the exit ramp with Trae Young,” ESPN’s Tim MacMahon reports. “They did not make any attempt to get him signed to an extension. When that’s the case with your face of the franchise, that’s a pretty clear message that the end could be near.”
