January 1, 2021 could be looked back upon as the catalyst for the Dawgs’ back to back national championships. If you don’t want to go THAT far, then surely we can all agree that this day provided some serious good vibes heading into the 2021 offseason that led to Georgia’s first title in 41 years (and don’t call me Shirley).
On that day, in the midst of the world still dealing with the Covid pandemic, the Georgia Bulldogs faced the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Peach Bowl. It was a tough fought game, with Cincy up 11 heading into the fourth quarter. Georgia, in what has now become a theme for the program, did not quit and fought back to 21-19 with seven seconds left.
Up steps up kicker Jack Podlesny to attempt a game-winning 54-yard field goal, in the black jerseys nonetheless.
We all know what happens next. Hot Pod drills a curling right-to-left kick that sails through the uprights, giving the Dawgs a 22-21 win. Podlesny would go on to be the starting kicker for both of Georgia’s national championships, playing a key role on both teams.
