Sandy Springs resident, Colombian immigrant receives Georgia Tech’s highest engineering honor

Sandy Springs resident Guiomar Obregón, co-founder and CEO of the Chamblee-based construction firm Precision 2000, was inducted into the Georgia Tech College of Engineering 2026 Academy of Distinguished Engineering Alumni.

As CEO of P2K, Obregón’s top clients include Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the U.S. Forest Service, the City of Atlanta, and the Georgia Department of Transportation. She has grown P2K into an award-winning firm renowned for its expertise in high-strength concrete repairs and civil infrastructure projects.

In the awards’ more than 20-year history, Obregón is the first Hispanic female to be inducted and joins a group of fewer than five Latin American inductees.

Sandy Springs CEO’s journey

Obregón and fellow graduate student Carlos Sánchez founded Precision 2000 in 1998 shortly after earning their degrees from Georgia Tech. The couple, both Colombian natives, turned P2K into one of “the Southeast’s most respected civil construction firms.”

“The company was founded 28 years ago, born from a suggestion that contractors needed certified minority businesses to handle available work,” a blog post on the company’s website said. “But before diving in, Obregón prepared meticulously, taking classes through the Small Business Administration to learn accounting, insurance, and bonding essentials.”

P2K is consistently featured on the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s list of 20 Largest Women-Owned Firms. Some of the firm’s ongoing projects around metro Atlanta include the Lenox Road streetscape and Howell Mill Road renovation. P2K is currently working on dozens of new sidewalks for this summer’s FIFA World Cup.

The company has also received awards from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Minority Business Development Agency, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Georgia District Office, and the Georgia Hispanic Construction Association.

In 2012, Obregón co-founded the Georgia Hispanic Construction Association, where she remains actively involved today. She regularly contributes to articles, panels, and other industry-focused events.

Earlier this year, Obregón received her third consecutive Georgia Titan 100 Award and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Just 10 business leaders in various industries across the state receive the honor annually.

Obregón’s legacy at Tech

In 2017, co-founders Obregón and Sánchez created P2K fellowships to support Colombian engineers at Georgia Tech pursuing a master’s degree in building construction and facility management. Today, the scholarship is open to any student interested in Hispanic culture.

Patricia White, a director at Georgia Tech’s School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, said Guiomar is the epitome of service and walking the walk. The fund’s total contributions reached $0.5 million last year.

“She’s a future-oriented builder who gets involved to shape the future of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and her profession,” White said. “Guiomar’s leadership in establishing student funding to support Hispanic and Latin American students, the P2K Hispanic Engineers of the Future, and the P2K Graduate Fellowship, and her involvement with these students, helps diversify the CEE student body and launch the careers of these young Hispanic engineers.”

In 2022, Georgia Tech dedicated a classroom to P2K in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering’s Mason Building.

“Guiomar is a fantastic representative of the vision, creativity, determination, and spirit of service that is the best of Georgia Tech,” White said. “We are grateful that she is a CEE alum.”
