So after two SEC title game appearances in three years, how did Georgia spend the 2005 college football offseason?

As a trendy prediction to lose to an upstart.

With mega-stars like David Greene, David Pollack and Fred Gibson having just graduated, holes had to be filled in a hurry – and that will had to be proven against an upstart from out West in Boise State.

With Georgia’s perceived rebuild and the Broncos coming off a third WAC title and high-scoring Liberty loss to Louisville, throes of conventional wisdom called for a coming out party for Boise.

But the new breed of Bulldogs turned out to be just fine in this top-20 matchup. It wasn’t even close as the Dawgs won 48-13 Between The Hedges. Chief among them? DJ Shockley. After previously spitting time under center with Greene, his first start saw him break a school record with six total touchdown passes – five through the air.

Boise’s much-touted quarterback Jared Zabransky – he did his best Shane Falco in the Sugar Bowl impression. He was picked off on the game’s first offensive play by Tony Taylor and again on the next drive by Dannell Ellerbe, helping to a 14-0 Georgia lead as the Broncos didn’t even scratch the scoreboard until the third quarter. After having five interceptions in all of 2004, Georgia had four against Boise alone.

The romp of Boise set the tone for the rest of the year for the Dawgs, who’d go on to topple LSU for the SEC title in December. The Broncos’ 2005 showed that they were a team not yet ready for prime time. They went 9-4, losing three times to ranked opponents. But as we know, Boise would eventually get their arrival a few years later against Oklahoma, who Georgia also has fond memories of playing against.
