New thermostat for the win

Wednesday, June 10 — It’s Cathy from Rough Draft with my weekly newsletter on Dunwoody. When people describe me, the words “good at fixing things” don’t come to mind. I’m trying to change that based on the premise that nobody should be defeated by technology, poorly translated installation instructions, or their friends saying, “Are you sure you’re up for that?”

???? This week, I courageously replaced a faulty heating/air thermostat with exactly the same brand, make, and model. It only took three hours of reading the incomprehensible installation instructions, 45 minutes thinking about potential injuries associated with an exploding furnace, several phone calls to friends to inform them of the location of my will, and two minutes to complete the task successfully. This must be what those NASA engineers experience after a successful launch.

Let’s start with a few announcements:

???? Runoff election early voting continues until Saturday. Vote early and often, as they say. Check out the candidates in our election guide.

Doorwoody detailed

???? I know I wrote a little blurb on Doorwoody last week, but here’s some more information about this public art exhibit featuring hand-designed miniature door displays created by Dunwoody High School students and installed at local businesses throughout the Greater Dunwoody Village area.

Developed in partnership with the Dunwoody Team of Leadership Perimeter, Doorwoody features work from 14 student artists.

Students submitted designs for consideration, then transformed plain miniature doors using paint and mixed materials. Most finished works are three-dimensional.

⚽ Here is more information on the program and the other great things Create Dunwoody is doing, including a FIFA-adjacent event.

Girls rule …

????????‍♀️Girls Who Walk Dunwoody was created when the founders, Delia O’Malley and another woman, simply called Jess, saw “a real need for more accessible, welcoming spaces where women in the area could connect in a natural and low-pressure way.”

“Making friends and building community as an adult can be difficult, especially for women who are new to the area, working from home, navigating life transitions, or simply looking for a consistent way to get out, move, and meet people,” according to the Girls Who Walk website.

In an Instagram post about the initiative, Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch said she is a “big believer that connection makes community.”

The weekly walks take place on Sunday mornings, beginning at 10 a.m. at Brook Run Park, followed by coffee and gal time at the Lucky Goat Coffee Company on Dunwoody Park (which is right next to Hummus Village, a new delicious lunch spot).

Groovin’ on the Green is back, starting Friday

????????‍???? This has become one of Dunwoody’s favorite summer and fall activities. The outdoor concert series “brings live music to the heart of the community with high-energy performances, laid-back vibes, and the perfect backdrop for a memorable night out.”

It’s held at the Brook Run Park Amphitheater (4770 North Peachtree Road) during the summer months. Admission is always free, and all ages are welcome. Bring a lawn chair, pack a cooler, and find a seat at stage left for the optimal shade (pro tip). The concerts begin at 6 p.m. with this week’s lineup including NeroSimon & Band X.

Last time I was at Groovin’ on the Green, I took a picture of this cutie above who was dancing like nobody was watching. So fun.

???? Rough Draft Atlanta has done a comprehensive roundup of area schools’ valedictorians and salutatorians, IMO, an amazing accomplishment in this ultra-competitive era.

Fun fact: I was only 130 slots away from being named to this honor when I graduated from high school back when dinosaurs roamed the earth. Next time.

???? Here’s our list of the 2026 honorees.
