Building vocabulary through image

Wednesday, July 8 — In Atlanta this month, two artists are proving that a signature style is constructed one deliberate choice at a time.

Billy Clifton-Strawn treats the smallest building blocks of digital pictures as raw material for storytelling rooted in family history and current events. His layered photographs, drawings and light works are “created in pixels,” and now on display inside Atlanta Central Library.

To the west at ZuCot Gallery, painter Petie Parker’s new works in black find shape, memory and story in the smallest shifts of tone. He calls the approach “Blackgrounds,” and uses it to give ordinary moments the weight usually reserved for extraordinary ones.

Neither vocabulary existed before these two built it.

Free play

???? Billy Clifton-Strawn could have shown “Pixels at Play” anywhere. He chose the basement of Atlanta Central Library, betting that someone browsing the stacks might wander in and leave changed.

What black holds

???? Petie Parker didn’t set out to be a painter. Still, five years into his practice, he’s built a visual language entirely his own. His latest scenes of ordinary life, rendered in shades of black, are on view now at ZuCot Gallery.
