Brookhaven City Council is planning to study mixed-use development in the large parking lot of the Brookhaven/Oglethorpe MARTA station on Apple Valley Road – adjacent to the highly-anticipated future city hall.

MARTA’s $1 billion commitment to station rehabilitation at all 38 rail stops included a six-week closure at Brookhaven/Oglethorpe in October 2024 to replace pavers on the train platform. After the installation of a canopy and wall repairs, sign upgrades, and SMART restroom installation, the station came into ADA compliance. The parking lot was also repaved.

Now that the Brookhaven City Centre is nearly complete, the city is beginning concept design for the development of the lot.

A memo states the study will gauge how to reposition the Brookhaven/Oglethorpe MARTA station as a major transit hub with safe and efficient bus-rail transfers, and strategies on how to boost ridership.

Brookhaven City Council members voted to approve an InterGovernmental Agreement (IGA) at a meeting on Tuesday, June 10. The IGA allows the city to manage and ensure “huge” public input, said Brookhaven City Manager Christian Sigman.

Council member John Funny said the agreement with MARTA will allow the city to “focus our city centre to what it can be in the future.”

Brookhaven will use The Sizemore Group to assess the “feasibility of transit-oriented development (TOD) and ancillary facilities to facilitate a mixed-use development within the Brookhaven MARTA station area,” the staff memo said.

Sizemore Group is familiar with the site and the city’s commitment to public engagement, Sigman said.

Brookhaven will pay for the study, but the city has not yet released the cost.

“This is the logical next step for the city centre master plan,” said Sigman.
