It felt like Atlanta had finally gotten the head coach hire right. But 20 games into his tenure, it’s difficult to point to anything Morris has tangibly improved on the field.
Morris was never touted as a schematic mastermind on either side of the ball. His value was supposed to come from three areas: assembling a top-notch coaching staff, attracting players to Atlanta, and getting the most out of his roster on Sundays.
So far, none of those boxes have been checked.
The Falcons already fired defensive coordinator Jimmy Lake after just one season, and after only three games this year, wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard was also shown the door. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Zac Robinson has offered little creativity, relying on vanilla concepts and predictable play-calling.
As for player recruitment, there hasn’t been a single notable signing tied to Morris’ presence. This isn’t college football — money rules everything in the NFL, especially when players only have a shelf life of a handful of years.
Even the energy, which was supposed to be Morris’ calling card, has been inconsistent. After the team’s embarrassing loss to the previously winless Panthers, Morris himself admitted that the Falcons lacked juice.
At this point, the Falcons have a coach who isn’t bringing much schematically, hasn’t attracted players, hasn’t gotten his team consistently motivated, already has a track record of questionable staff hires, and has no idea how to manage the clock.
So what exactly has Raheem Morris done positively since taking over as Atlanta’s head coach?
On the latest episode of SportsTalkATL, we attempted to answer that question. You can find SportsTalkATL on our YouTube channel, with full episodes also available on Fox Local!
