The Braves picked up Charlie Morton earlier in the week after he was designated for assignment. He rejoined the team, but there was no word on whether or not he’d make one final appearance for the club before likely sailing off into the sunset of retirement.
That question has now been answered, as Braves beat reporter Mark Bowman is reporting that Charlie Morton will start in Atlanta’s season finale against the Pirates, with Chris Sale following him in relief.
Morton will now start Sunday’s game against the Pirates and Sale will follow. Pretty fitting ending for Charlie. The Pirates and Braves are the teams with which he spent a majority of his career.

This will be a special moment for Charlie Morton following a year he’d probably like to forget from a performance standpoint. The Braves are his third team of the season after he posted a 5.89 ERA across stints with the Orioles and Tigers.
Many of Morton’s best seasons came in Atlanta from 2021–2024, including his pivotal role in helping the Braves capture the Commissioner’s Trophy in his first year with the club. Nostalgia will be palpable in every corner of Truist Park when Morton exits the field for the final time, and to make it even more meaningful, his last game will come against the Pittsburgh Pirates — the organization where he spent the most years of his career.
It’s a fitting gesture by the Braves, and one Charlie Morton will carry with him for the rest of his life.
