Dianna Russini and a few other reporters have named the Falcons, Giants, and Titans as the three “favorites” to land former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh, but of the three, New York has been applying relentless pressure in an attempt to get something done early in the interview process.
“The Giants’ pursuit of John Harbaugh has been aggressive …. phone calls, lunch, private planes, everything you could think of,” NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports. “Now he’s officially in their building today. And if the Giants and Harbaugh truly want each other, they could hire him today, as the Giants have complied with all the rules necessary to make a coaching hire, per sources.”
The Giants may not be the staple of stable franchises in recent years, but it’s hard to ignore some of the attractive aspects of the job. First and foremost, living and winning in New York is different. It just is, and it’s not something a market like Atlanta can offer if that’s an appealing factor for John Harbaugh.
On the field, Jaxson Dart showed a ton of promise as a rookie, and he did so without his top wide receiver target in Malik Nabers. There’s a lot to like about him, and the Giants also own the No. 5 pick in the draft.
There are things to like about the Falcons job as well. Most notably, they play in arguably the most winnable division in the NFL, but the bones of Atlanta’s roster are also far superior to what New York currently has in its building. The Falcons are already a playoff-caliber football team, no matter what they decide to do under center moving forward.
Working with a fresh face like Matt Ryan should also be viewed as a plus, and while Arthur Blank might not be the best decision-maker as an owner, he is a fantastic guy to have in your corner as a head coach.
If it is the Giants, a decision from John Harbaugh could come as early as today. It certainly looks like they are going to do everything in their power to ensure he does not leave the building without signing a contract.
