The Hawks will be busy this offseason after firing Landry Fields. The search has begun, and the rumors are that Atlanta is targeting former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers, but that’s just the beginning.
Whoever gets the job will have a lot of things to accomplish this offseason. The Hawks will have to get pen to paper on a Trae Young extension, and then they’ll have to decide on a path in which they will take. Are they going to go big game hunting on the trade market? Or are they going to continue to cultivate their already-solid foundation?
If the Hawks’ actions during the middle of season are any indication, it looks as if the team hopes to land a big fish. According to Brett Siegel, the Hawks were among clubs that held talks at the trade deadline with the Suns surrounding Kevin Durant and/or Devin Booker, with Siegel noting it could’ve been angled towards the future.
“The Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Atlanta Hawks all held discussions with the Suns at the trade deadline, sources said. Both Booker and Durant came up in these trade talks, some being more angled towards the future than at the deadline itself,” Siegel wrote.
It’s not clear which superstar the Hawks were interested in, or perhaps they were interested in both; but the club is clearly mulling a blockbuster-esque move this offseason. We’ll see if new General Manager Onsi Saleh and the Hawks next President of Basketball Operations share that same vision over the next few months.
