It’s been a wild 2025, and really last few years, for Ian Anderson. Entering Spring Training, the Braves were essentially begging for him to make the Opening Day roster. He was out of options, and they certainly didn’t want to lose another starting pitcher, given they were already lacking in the depth department.

However, Anderson’s inability to miss bats combined with abysmal control really gave the Braves no choice. He was nowhere close to being a major-league starting pitcher, forcing Atlanta to trade him to the Los Angeles Angels, where they attempted to turn him into a reliever, an experiment that failed miserably.

Anderson posted a gaudy 11.57 ERA over 9.1 innings before the Angels pulled the plug, designating him for assignment. The Braves ended up claiming him, and now Anderson is back with the organization in Gwinnett, where he made his first start for the Stripers today, tossing three innings of one-run ball on five hits and one walk while striking out a couple.

Soon after the Braves re-acquired Ian Anderson, Brian Snitker made it clear how the organization views him moving forward.

“He cleared (waivers), he’s gonna go down (to Triple A), he’s gonna start again. Hopefully we get him stretched out and he finds himself again. That’s the hope. And just getting him regular starts. I don’t see him as a reliever. He’s a starter,” Snitker said, via David O’Brien of The Athletic

Ian Anderson has been through a lot since he was a postseason hero for the Braves back in 2020-2021, from struggles on the field to multiple injuries, including Tommy John surgery. He had so much success as such a young arm that it’s hard to believe he’s still just 26-years-old. It’ll be a long road before he’s thrust back into major-league action with the Braves, but baseball has a funny way of working itself out. All it takes is for a couple of things to start clicking again, and Anderson could end up being a key piece to another deep postseason run.
