The Dunwoody Homeowners Association “lit up” Dunwoody on Nov. 14 to officially open the holiday season.

The annual Light Up Dunwoody event moved to a new venue – the lawn of the Donaldson-Bannister House at the corner of Chamblee Dunwoody and Vermack Road, and organizers and attendees applauded the move.

“I am elated with everything about this day,” said DHA president Tim Brown. “Any concerns we had evaporated. It’s a great venue, the weather was perfect, and I couldn’t be happier.”

Parking was available at nearby Independence Square Office Park and Vermack Pool for the event, which ran from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and culminated with the twilight lighting of the holiday tree and menorah.

Brown said the event drew an estimated 3,500 people.

Entertainment included routines by Dan & Company dancers, a performance by the Dunwoody High School band, crafts for children, and an appearance by Santa. Spruill Center for the Arts supplied materials to make a snow globe ornament to take home or place on the DHA tree, with an estimated 300 produced.

“This event is fantastic and looks so great at its new location,” said Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch.

Event Producer Jimmy Economos said the event saw steady participation from 2 p.m. until it ended with the tree and menorah lighting.

“I love this venue,” Economos said. “Moving Santa and the reindeer a little farther apart really helped with crowd flow. And all the performers loved having the new stage that gave better visability.”

The DHA and the Dunwoody Preservation Trust co-hosted the event. Rough Draft Atlanta was the media sponsor.
