Braves potential starting pitching target off the market

Despite the offseason window being open for two-and-a-half months, there are still plenty of high-quality starting pitchers remaining on the free agent market. However, one of those names came off the board today, with Ranger Suárez signing a five-year, $130 million contract with the Boston Red Sox.

A five-year, $130 million haul for Ranger Suárez is a bit pricey, and it reeks of a little desperation from the Red Sox, who likely felt pressure to take a big swing after losing out on Alex Bregman to the Cubs.

If that’s the market for the top-end starting pitchers still available, it’s difficult to imagine the Braves shopping in that aisle after all the money they’ve already committed to the roster this offseason.

That likely takes a guy like Framber Valdez out of the picture, but perhaps Atlanta could still convince Zac Gallen to take a short-term deal in hopes of rebuilding his value and re-entering free agency as early as next offseason. The former Diamondbacks ace is coming off a season in which he posted a 4.83 ERA over 33 starts, but prior to that, he had back-to-back top-five finishes in the NL Cy Young race in 2022-2023.

I still remain firm that if the Braves are going to add a marquee starting pitcher this offseason, which they should, it’s most likely going to come via trade. Most recently, Freddy Peralta is a name that’s been floated as a candidate, with the Braves reportedly having interest.

Aside from Atlanta’s pursuit of a frontline arm, getting a pitcher like Ranger Suárez out of the NL East should only be viewed as a plus. He made three starts against the Braves last season, going 2-0 with a microscopic 1.00 ERA.
