It’s porch pirate season, and one Tucker woman reports she’s already fallen prey.
Olivia Wilson, a Tucker resident in Facebook group “Tucker City Talk,” shared photos from her door step around 10:42 p.m. on Nov. 25, when she said a person stole a package from her front porch on Florence Street.
“We were asleep when the package was delivered and when it was taken, so we didn’t even have a chance to get it before it was stolen,” Wilson wrote in the post. “What upsets me the most about this is that someone was bold enough to come onto our property. That’s extremely worrisome.”
Wilson said the alleged thief got away with likely less than they had hoped for – $5 paint shields.
DeKalb County Police Department has issued warnings to Tucker and DeKalb County residents based on the prevalence of theft at homes and robberies at physical shopping locations throughout the holiday season. When receiving deliveries, the police department advises that residents schedule their packages for times when they can quickly secure them.
“Schedule them [when possible] for a time when you will be home to get them immediately without concerns of porch pirates,” Blaine Clark, DKPD public information officer, said in a statement. “If that’s not possible, coordinate with friends, family, or neighbors to have them pick up your packages.”
After the purchases arrive and are opened, break down the boxes and put them into a recycling container, Clark said. Thieves may see an empty television box, for instance, on your curb, which “may entice them to break into your home to steal it.”
Other DKPD holiday shopping tips:
When shopping at physical stores:
• Shop in pairs or groups. Individual shoppers can be seen as more of a target by thieves and robbers;
• Park in well-lit areas;
• Don’t leave any of your purchases or other items in plain sight in your car. Thieves can break into your vehicle to steal your things, adding vehicle repair costs to the crime.
When shopping online:
• Shop from secure, reputable stores to avoid scams.
• Use secure payment methods like credit cards or trusted payment services (for instance, PayPal) because they offer buyer protection.
