Former Falcons wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud III takes a shot at Raheem Morris

Raheem Morris has come under fire following the Falcons sixth loss in their last seven games, this time to the lowly New York Jets. But not just by the fans and media, but former players as well, with former Atlanta wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud making his opinion crystal clear on Twitter/X.

The Falcons’ decision to dismiss wide receivers coach Ike Hilliard after a 30-0 loss in Week 3 was a head-scratcher. A couple of weeks later, Ray-Ray McCloud — who openly expressed displeasure with the move — was released.

The firing came off as emotional, with Hilliard looking like the scapegoat for a game where nothing went right. The Falcons didn’t show up as a team, which is far more of an indictment on the man in charge than on any one position coach. But then Atlanta won its next two games, including a convincing Monday Night Football victory over the Bills, and the need for an explanation temporarily faded. Now, after yet another collapse, it’s fair to wonder whether other players feel the same way as McCloud, especially ones far more important to the team’s long-term future.

Despite this dismal stretch, Raheem Morris has repeatedly denied the possibility of firing any coaches — namely Marquice Williams, who oversees one of the worst special teams units in football, which once again cost the Falcons a win on Sunday against the Jets.

At this point, it probably doesn’t matter. The Falcons are stuck in another lost season and will soon be eliminated from playoff contention altogether. No coaching shakeup is going to fix things overnight, and the organization would be foolish not to clean house after the season ends. But it will be interesting to see if more information surfaces about the situation involving Ike Hilliard and Ray-Ray McCloud, because it certainly feels like a lot more happened behind the scenes than what’s been made public.
